FEATURED CLIENT: A CASE STUDY

Founded in 1920, Recology is a San Francisco-based waste management company with over $1 billion in revenue and 3,800 employees.


For several years, the company performed an annual risk assessment and heat map process led by a “Big 4” firm. Board members and corporate leaders didn’t find this process useful in supporting board oversight and business decisions.

In 2018, one of the top 5 annual goals for the CEO and Board of Directors was to implement a best-in-class ERM program. JLA was retained to help design, develop, and implement that new program.

 

Key highlights of the engagement include:

  • Established a risk oversight committee of the Board
  • Organized 5 working teams for fast-track implementation
  • Developed key ERM tools, including risk appetite statement, risk culture survey, company-wide ERM training, earnings-at-risk analysis, and quarterly board risk report
  • Integrated ERM with the company’s 5-year strategic plan, M&A playbook, and cybersecurity program
  • Demonstrated business value, including a rapid response to a massive fire, and reducing cleanup time from 18 months to 6 months

Recology worked with JLA to implement a robust ERM program in under 2 years, without additional staff and ahead of its original 3-year plan.
