The speed of value creation and destruction is accelerating rapidly. On average, a company spent 33 years on the S&P500 in 1964. It is about 22 years today and estimated to be 12 years by 2027.
ERM programs can help mitigate downside risk and capture upside value. An S&P study showed that, based on relative stock price performance, companies with advanced ERM programs were much more resilient during and after the 2008 financial crisis. Another study by Hoyt and Liebenberg indicated that companies with ERM programs were associated with a 16.5% equity price premium.
Organizations face highly complex and unprecedented risks—global pandemic, economic uncertainties, disruptive technologies, geopolitical risks, climate change, and cybersecurity—yet only 24% of executives surveyed reported that their ERM programs are mature or robust.

James’ most recent book Implementing Enterprise Risk Management: From Methods to Applications, focuses on the “how” of ERM (whereas his previous books focused on the “what”). Amazon has ranked it #1 new release and one of the best-selling among risk management and business finance books. Key topics include how to develop a risk appetite statement, how to instill a strong risk culture, how to support effective board oversight, and how to create value by integrating ERM with strategy and business decisions.
Enterprise Risk Management: From Incentives to Controls was James’ first book and one of the earliest on ERM. The book has ranked #1 best-selling among 25,000 risk management titles on Amazon. It has been translated into Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, and Korean. In a 2007 Conference Board survey of ERM practitioners in the U.S. and Canada, it was ranked among the top-10 in ERM books and research papers.
