Client Engagements

Since 2002, our firm has successfully completed over 50 risk management engagements working with corporate directors, CEOs, CFOs, CROs and senior risk, audit, and compliance executives. By tailoring our work plans and key deliverables based on the unique requirements of each client, we have achieved an exceptionally high level of client satisfaction. Forrester Research ranked James Lam & Associates (JLA) among a select number of consulting firms with extensive risk capabilities across all major industries. Client engagements include:

  • Enterprise Risk Management. Worked with a newly appointed CRO to establish an ERM program that integrated strategic, financial, operational, regulatory/compliance, and reputational risks. Developed a vision and multi-year roadmap with specific milestones and benefits. Final deliverables also included an ERM framework, governance structure, ERM policy and risk appetite statement, risk analytics and dashboard reporting. Implemented an innovative methodology of linking earnings-at-risk and earning attribution analyses to provide a performance "feedback loop" for ERM.

  • Strategic Risk Management. Established a strategic risk management framework for the board of directors and executive leadership team. This framework included an analytical model that quantifies the risk/return implications of alternative M&A and growth strategies, including the impact on business diversification, earnings and earnings-at-risk, and enterprise value and debt rating.

  • Operational Risk Management. Developed an operational risk framework and methodology, including loss-event tracking, risk-control self assessment, key risk indicators, operational risk reporting, and risk mitigation and insurance strategies. The operational risk methodology was fully piloted and successfully tested at two business units.

  • Market Risk Management. Conducted an independent assessment and benchmark analysis of a market risk function, including recommendations on risk policies (e.g., market risk policy, model governance and validation policy), risk measurement methodologies, board and management reporting, and back-testing procedures. Provided model testing of a value-at-risk (VaR) model.

  • Credit Risk Management. Redesigned the credit risk management process, including credit risk policy, origination and pricing, transaction approval, portfolio management, risk transfer, and problem asset management. Established an innovative bad asset pricing model to establish the "indifference price" for non-performing loans and loan portfolios.

  • Economic Capital. Established an economic capital and RAROC system, including methodologies for matched-maturity transfer pricing, cost allocation, economic capital attribution, product and relationship pricing, and line-of-business profitability and enterprise value management.

  • Internal Audit Support. Served as the subject matter expert in assisting an internal audit team in the audit planning and review of the enterprise risk management function. Developed a customized ERM maturity model and best-practice benchmarks as part of the audit report to evaluate ongoing development.

Special Projects

In addition to consulting engagements, JLA has also supported clients on special projects:

  • CRO Support. Served as “acting CRO” in overseeing ERM planning and implementation, as well as reviewing specific risk management strategies and transactions. Also served as “executive coach” in advising CROs in their ERM initiatives.

  • Expert Analysis. Worked with a major Wall Street law firm as an expert witness, and successfully defended a "bulge bucket" investment bank against a nine-figure claim from a mortgage hedge fund. Also worked with plaintiffs counsel on various corporate governance and risk management cases.

  • Board Investigation. Conducted a special investigation for the audit committee of the board of a NYSE company with respect to an internal control issue. Presented the independent report to the full board, which included root causes and recommended changes to internal controls and board risk oversight.

  • Business Development. Worked with a leading software company to extend its brand and product capabilities from Sarbanes-Oxley compliance to operational risk and ERM. Also served on the advisory board and assisted in business development activities, such as market research, consultative sales, client events and webinars, and white papers.

  • Recruiting Support. Worked with the client’s executive recruiter in sourcing and assessing candidates for CROs and senior level risk positions. Provided independent evaluations of final candidates with respect to their industry reputation, risk acumen and organizational fit.
